Kraut Run

The Fredericksburg Morning Rotary Club was searching for fundraiser that helped the community as previous projects were one-time events. In 2009, two members from the club, Zephyr Stone and Becky Daley, were fitness enthusiasts. Bob Hickerson, who passed away in September 2022, agreed to help with the organization of an 8K run/walk that took place on the Saturday morning of Fredericksburg's Oktoberfest, an event that has taken place for more than 40 years. The club was on board with the event. Susan Kimbrell took on registration for the event and Lorrie Hess joined that committee after becoming an official member. Marc Bennett has spearheaded getting the site of the run set up- including lighting, tents, signs and more. Brad Schneider became the go-to for food and beer. Zach and Karen Pooser worked to install signage the evening before or early the morning of. Signs were handmade by Bob in his garage. Together with the help of the entire club, the event was born.

In 2022, with the guidance from Bob, Hugh Reeves overtook the event's organization and logistics. He continues to make sure everything is planned and prepared.

Together with the help of every club member, the event has seen great success. The first year there were 200 participants and in 2022, the event saw nearly 600 participants.

Proceeds from the run support local literacy efforts including the distribution of dictionaries to elementary students, Books for Babies (a program with the local hospital to give a new book to newborn babies and vocational scholarships.
